Airbnb Heritage Publication

Airbnb Heritage, a new program of Airbnb, exists to connect people with history and design through the immersive experience of living in historic and/or historically designed homes. Airbnb Heritage: Mid Century Modern Edition is a publication sent to users who book an Airbnb Heritage home. The publication aims to make history accessible to Airbnb visitors by bringing design stories into the home.

Launching with a focus on mid-century modernism, the publication highlights the stories of mid-century modern designers and Airbnb Heritage homes that align with various philosophies of mid-century modernism.

This publication and all supplemental materials were created with 3 peers. My roles in the design team included: ideation, art direction, layout design, typesetting, and social media design.

The Opportunity

With Airbnb’s release of new filters for finding specific places to stay, we saw an opportunity to synthesize Design Homes and Historical Homes into one category - Heritage Homes. This group would host a variety of subcategories with more specific search options for users.

Airbnb Heritage is a new category full of uniquely designed homes that have historic roots or are emulating stylistic movements of the past. The new campaign is launching with mid-century modernism as the highlighted historic design style of homes for visitors to stay in.

A publication telling the stories of mid-century modern designers and Airbnb Heritage homes that align with various philosophies of mid-century modernism will be sent to visitors and Airbnb Heritage homes.

The Solution

Airbnb has partnered with the Farnsworth House to provide a platform to spread awareness and encourage action in protecting this iconic home. By booking and experiencing an Airbnb Heritage home, not only are our users experiencing a unique design history home, but a percentage of all bookings go towards the preservation of the Farnsworth House.

The story of the Farnsworth House and Airbnb’s partnership to help preserve it are featured in the publication.

The Greater Purpose

In order to gain a full understanding of the user experience and the various touchpoints that a visitor would interact with, supplemental materials were designed to pair with the publication. As a digital platform, Airbnb’s website is a central part of the user’s experience leading up to their stay at the Airbnb Heritage home.

Social media and a variety of merchandise were also considered in order to fully develop the “Airbnb Heritage” program.
